Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) visited Kookmin University, which launched the ‘1,000 Won Breakfast’ project, on the 15th to inspect the progress of the initiative.

On this day, Mayor Lee Seung-ro of Seongbuk-gu visited the Kookmin University student cafeteria to have breakfast together and hear directly from students on site. National Assembly member Kim Young-bae and Seoul City Council member Han Shin accompanied him.

The ‘1,000 Won Breakfast’ project supports university students with a high rate of skipping breakfast to have a quality morning meal for 1,000 won. Seongbuk-gu held a meeting last month on this topic and discussed a support plan with six universities in the region (Korea University, Kookmin University, Dongduk Women’s University, Seokyeong University, Sungshin Women’s University, Hansung University) to share the financial burden with the district.

Seongbuk-gu is the first local government nationwide to financially support all universities in the region participating in the project.

The district decided to invest about 150 million KRW from its budget to cover the 1,000 won school contribution for the ‘1,000 Won Breakfast’ program at each university. The purpose is to reduce the financial burden on schools and expand the project so that more young people can benefit.

Accordingly, in addition to Korea University, which was already participating, five new universities began operating the ‘1,000 Won Breakfast’ program earlier this month.

District Mayor Lee Seung-ro, National Assembly member Kim Young-bae, and other local officials, along with school representatives, are having breakfast and conversing with the students.

On the 15th at Kookmin University, Mayor Lee Seung-ro listened to the difficulties young people face regarding university life and employment. Yang Eun-ah, president of the Kookmin University Student Council, who was present, said, “I used to often skip breakfast, but since the implementation of the ‘1,000 Won Breakfast,’ students including myself have been able to start the day with a hearty meal,” and expressed gratitude for the attention and support toward young people.

The mayor said, “I am glad to have the opportunity to meet young people directly on site and hear their opinions,” adding, “We will continue to devise and implement policies that practically help young people’s lives, such as the ‘1,000 Won Breakfast.’ I also ask our youth to take an active interest in district administration and participate enthusiastically.”

Seongbuk-gu’s 2023 ‘1,000 Won Breakfast’ program is scheduled to operate for five months from May to November, excluding the summer vacation period (July to August).

On the 10th, Seongbuk-gu held the ‘2023 On-site Mayor’s Office Talk: Let’s Speak Openly’ at the Democracy Square of Kookmin University, where young people freely discussed youth issues and policies. Reflecting the characteristics of the area with many universities and young residents, the district is also implementing various youth policies such as creating the Gireum Youth Startup Street, supporting exam fees for unemployed youth’s certification and language tests, and operating the K-Beauty Academy.
