Gwanak-gu Launches Full-Scale 'Summer Season Comprehensive Measures'

From May 15 to October 15, measures will be implemented in five key areas: heatwave, flood control, safety, health, and daily life

Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) has established the "2023 Summer Comprehensive Measures" and entered an emergency response system to prevent various disasters and safety accidents such as heatwaves and wind and flood damage that occur during the summer season, minimizing inconvenience to residents.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's climate forecast, heavy rain and heatwaves are expected again this summer. The district has set the period from May 15 to October 15 as the comprehensive measures implementation period and prepared measures in five key areas (▲heatwave ▲flood control ▲safety ▲health ▲daily life) to ensure all residents can spend a safe and healthy summer.

The district operates the 'Heatwave Countermeasure Comprehensive Support Situation Room' for rapid situation dissemination and heatwave management, and carries out customized protection activities for vulnerable groups such as elderly living alone, disabled persons, and homeless people.

Cooling shelters are operated at 138 locations including senior centers and community service centers, and smart shade shelters are installed near crosswalks and traffic islands with heavy pedestrian traffic to provide urban resting places for residents.

Also, since last year’s record-breaking heavy rain caused significant damage, the district operates the "Disaster Safety Countermeasure Headquarters," led by District Mayor Park Jun-hee and composed of 13 task forces, and has prepared step-by-step flood control measures according to rainfall and weather conditions.

In particular, flood prevention facilities and operable security windows are installed in households at risk of flooding. Public officials and neighbors form ‘Flood Disaster Vulnerable Companion Partners’ to immediately disseminate information and assist residents who cannot evacuate on their own when flood warnings are issued.

For elderly living alone aged 80 and above, the AI care robot ‘Kimi’ is provided to prepare for emergencies, and the ‘Starlight Naeruncheon River Patrol Team’ operates to prevent safety accidents such as isolation in rivers during heavy rain.

To prevent major citizen disasters, safety inspections of facilities are strengthened and the fixation status of large outdoor advertisements is thoroughly checked.

Additionally, during the summer vacation season, gas safety management guidelines will be intensively promoted to raise safety awareness.

As a health measure, based on government policies on COVID-19, the district will establish an endemic foundation and promote the transition to a routine management system. It will strengthen infectious disease prevention and quarantine activities during summer and support residents to enjoy summer safely through water quality inspections and safety management of drinking water facilities (spring water sites), swimming pools, and water play areas.

Furthermore, timely collection of household waste and creation of clean street environments will help residents enjoy a pleasant summer, and support for children at risk of food insecurity and activities to improve harmful environments for youth will promote a healthy and safe summer vacation for young people.
