Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, which has produced such world-renowned musicians who have left a distinct mark in both classical and popular music, has also nurtured many artists leading the Korean classical music scene. Among them are Lee Jong-young, former dean of Kyung Hee University College of Music and a matriarch of the Korean cello community; pianist Choi Hee-yeon, appointed in 1999 as the youngest professor at Seoul National University College of Music at the time; and Bae Il-hwan, professor of orchestral music and cellist at Ewha Womans University College of Music. In addition, the Korean alumni of Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, numbering over 350 musicians, will hold a concert to present their unique harmony.
The Korean Alumni Association of Indiana University Jacobs School of Music announced on the 12th that it will hold the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Alumni Concert ‘Harmony Homecoming’ on the 19th at Ilsin Hall in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul.
This concert will feature Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major, D.667, ‘Die Forelle,’ where impactful variations express intense freedom; Alexander Borodin’s ‘Polovtsian Dances: from Prince Igor for Four Hands Piano,’ which exudes an oriental atmosphere yet sometimes reveals a rough ensemble presence; and Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Brazilian-style Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, W. 389, infused throughout with the symbolic green of Brazil.
Also on the program are Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67; David Popper’s Polonaise de Concert, Op. 14 for 8 Cellos; Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 44; and Kim Dong-jin’s Shin Arirang.

Notably, this performance will be attended by Pamela Whitten, President of Indiana University; Abra Bush, Dean of the Jacobs School of Music; and violinist Lee Kyung-sun, former Seoul National University professor and newly appointed tenured professor at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music earlier this year, who will support the alumni.
The Indiana University Korean Alumni Association, established in 1987, currently has 2,100 active members. The Jacobs School of Music alumni association, with over 350 members, has presented 15 concerts from 2000 through last year, showcasing special performances.
Kim Nam-jung, president of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Korean Alumni Association, explained, “We chose the theme ‘Harmony Homecoming’ to remind our musicians that they are each other’s ‘pillar’ in their activities and to welcome talented new alumni in the future.”
He added, “Since the program is planned to allow the audience to enjoy various chamber music ensembles such as piano quintet, piano ensemble, soprano, and an 8-cello ensemble, we hope you will feel the beautiful ‘harmony’ of performing ‘one music’ together.”
