HD Hyundai Empowering Solar Power... Launches Development of Ultra-High-Efficiency Solar Cell Technology

Selected as Lead Institution for Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy National Project
Mass Production of 26% Efficiency Solar Cells by 2026
Development of Tandem Module Core Technology with Hyundai Motor

HD Hyundai Energy Solutions, a subsidiary of HD Hyundai's solar power division, is accelerating the development of ultra-high-efficiency solar products, which are gaining attention as next-generation technology.

On the 12th, HD Hyundai Energy Solutions announced that it was recently selected as the lead organization for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's national project, "Advancement of mass production technology for large-area thin HJT solar cells and modules." A total of eight domestic component and equipment manufacturers, solar research institutes, and universities are participating in this national project led by HD Hyundai Energy Solutions.

Through this project, HD Hyundai Energy Solutions plans to begin mass production of ultra-high-efficiency large-area (M10 class) HJT solar cells by 2026. The goal is to increase the power generation efficiency of solar products, which currently remain in the low 20% range, to 26%. The company also intends to promote the development and commercialization of HJT-related materials, components, and equipment technologies to revitalize the domestic solar industry ecosystem. Currently, the efficiency of commercially available global solar cells is up to about 23%. The efficiency competition among solar companies is close, with differences measured in decimal points.

HJT (Hetero-junction Technology) features a structure where amorphous silicon is coated on monocrystalline silicon, minimizing surface energy loss during photoelectric conversion, resulting in high efficiency and relatively simple manufacturing processes. It has the highest power generation per unit area, making it highly applicable in cases where solar panel area is limited, such as urban high-rise buildings or electric vehicles.

It is also highly compatible with the future ultra-high-efficiency solar technology "Tandem," which achieves power generation efficiency of over 30%, drawing attention as next-generation technology. The German solar market research institute ITRPV forecasts that the global market share of high-efficiency "N-type" solar products, including HJT, will exceed 50% starting in 2026.

HD Hyundai Energy Solutions is collaborating with domestic industry-academia-research institutions to develop tandem solar cell technology, while also actively pursuing future solar technologies by starting the development of core tandem module technologies with Hyundai Motor Company.

An official from HD Hyundai Energy Solutions stated, "Through this national project, we will lay the foundation for securing core tandem technology based on ultra-high-efficiency HJT," adding, "We will lead the global market and realize carbon neutrality through various solar applications such as zero-energy buildings and eco-friendly mobility solutions."
