Gyeongnam Police Agency, 58 out of 111 Union Chief Election Offenders Referred, 4 Detained

A Total of 71 Cases, Investigation Underway for 34 People, Speeding Up the Process

The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency sent 58 election crime suspects to the prosecution and detained 4 of them in connection with the 3rd nationwide simultaneous cooperative head election held on March 8.


On the 12th, the provincial police agency announced that it investigated a total of 71 cooperative head election crime cases involving 111 suspects, sending 58 to prosecution, not prosecuting 19, and continuing to investigate 34.

According to the provincial police agency, one suspect who appealed to cooperative members for support of a specific candidate and provided 2 million won in cash and another suspect who provided 500,000 won were detained.


One person who sent defamatory content about an opposing candidate via social networking services (SNS) was also arrested.


One person who sent New Year's greeting cards and election promotional leaflets to cooperative members related to the cooperative head election before the election campaign period, thereby conducting early election campaigning, was also caught.

By type of crime, 84 people (75.7%) were involved in providing money and entertainment, 19 people (17.1%) in false fact publication and candidate defamation, 6 people (5.4%) in election method violations such as early election campaigning, and 2 people (1.8%) in other election crimes.


A provincial police agency official said, "Considering the six-month statute of limitations, we plan to promptly handle election crimes still under investigation," adding, "We will continue to collect intelligence and crack down on acts of providing money or goods under the pretext of congratulations, consolation, or return gifts after the election day."
