Couple Drowns in Riverside Camping Tragedy... Swept Away While Moving by Car

Vehicle recovered after being swept away by sudden floodwaters

A couple camping by a river in Socheon-myeon, Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongbuk, tragically lost their lives after being swept away by heavy rain.

According to the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency on the 9th, a woman in her 30s, Ms. A, who went missing along with her husband while camping by the river in Bonghwa-gun, was found dead after three days of search.

Around 2:38 PM on the 7th, a report was received from a passenger traveling by train about an object that appeared to be a person. Rescue authorities have been dispatched to the scene and are currently handling the situation. [Photo source below: Provided by Gyeongbuk Fire Department]

Earlier, her husband Mr. B was seen deceased by a citizen under a railway bridge on a river rock in Socheon-myeon, Bonghwa-gun on the 7th. The police estimate that both individuals drowned.

The police confirmed that the couple had driven together on the 5th, parked their vehicle by the river, and set up a tent.

Firefighters and police from Gyeongbuk are searching for a missing person on the 9th in a tributary of the Nakdong River in Socheon-myeon, Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongbuk.

It was also determined through black box footage that as the river water rose, the couple was swept away by the rapid current while trying to leave by car. According to authorities, the gear of the recovered vehicle was in the drive (D) position.

The police and fire authorities believe the couple was caught in the suddenly swollen river caused by heavy rain during the holiday period in Bonghwa-gun. From the 4th to the 6th, Bonghwa-gun received 150mm of rain. Notably, on the evening of the 5th, the nearby Nakdong River water level was 2.7m but rose sharply by more than 1m to 3.8m within five hours.

The police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident based on CCTV footage and witness statements. A police official stated, "Both the husband and wife appear to have drowned, but an autopsy will be conducted to confirm the exact cause of death."
