President Joe Biden, who had consistently responded with 'no comment' regarding former U.S. President Donald Trump facing a criminal trial, has finally spoken out.
According to the Associated Press and others on the 29th (local time), President Biden said at the White House Correspondents' Association annual dinner that comedian Roy Wood Jr., the dinner speaker, offered to give him $10 (about 13,000 KRW) in exchange for keeping his speech short. Biden then added, "This is a role reversal," saying, "The president was offered 'hush money.'"
This is interpreted as a satire of former President Trump's alleged 'hush money' related to a sexual scandal. It contrasts with Biden's previous behavior of keeping a firm silence while distancing himself from the related case.
Former President Trump was indicted last month on charges of paying $130,000 (about 170 million KRW) from company funds to porn actress Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election to conceal their sexual encounter in 2006.
Meanwhile, former President Trump and prominent Republican figures claim 'political persecution,' citing that the prosecutor who brought the indictment is a Democrat. According to a survey by the U.S. polling organization SSRS, 60% of American respondents supported the indictment, but 76% said politics played some role.
