Gaon Group announced on the 28th that it has been selected for the "Information and Communication Broadcasting Standard Development Support Project," supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation, and is developing "next-generation media compression standard technology for metaverse content transmission and storage" while pursuing the acquisition of standard patents.

This project aims to proactively secure global standard patents and enhance technological competitiveness as the metaverse market expands rapidly. Amid the growing market dominance of global companies holding key standard patents, securing standard patents is essential for domestic companies to reduce dependence on overseas technologies and gain market leadership.

In this national project conducted through an industry-academia-research consortium, Gaon Group, as the lead company, oversees the patent application tasks for standard technology development and rights acquisition, as well as the overall project management. The consortium consists of Kyung Hee University, Hanyang University, Sejong University, and Atinsco, with the project period lasting until the end of 2025.

A company representative stated, “We plan to secure global standard patents for core metaverse-related technologies and pursue monetization through licensing, while applying these to advance our existing businesses. We will integrate next-generation virtual reality (VR) technology into our AI devices and seek opportunities to expand the business scope of XR devices developed by our subsidiaries to maximize synergy.”

Expectations for the expansion of the metaverse market remain high. Apple is scheduled to release XR devices within this year, and Samsung Electronics’ announcement of entering the XR market in partnership with Google and Qualcomm has further raised anticipation. Global consulting firm PwC forecasts that the worldwide XR-related market will grow to approximately 1,700 trillion KRW by 2030.

Meanwhile, Gaon Group is expanding its business portfolio through its subsidiaries to include ▲network solutions ▲XR solutions ▲robot integrated platforms, alongside its AI OTT solution business.
