Wando-gun, Key Points to Watch in Weightlifting at the 31st Jeonnam Disabled Sports Festival

Match Held at Gunwoe Myeon Multipurpose Gymnasium

The '31st Jeollanam-do Disabled Sports Competition' will be held in Wando-gun.

The organizing committee of the competition is introducing the rules and viewing points of each event every week, and this week's featured event is 'weightlifting.'

The weightlifting competition of the 31st Jeollanam-do Disabled Sports Competition will take place from the 24th to the 26th of next month at the Gunoe-myeon Multipurpose Gymnasium, with about 150 athletes from various cities and counties participating. The competition will be held as individual events by disability type and weight class.

Disabled weightlifting is divided according to disability type: physical disabilities, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, amputations, and other disabilities compete in bench press events, while visual, hearing, and intellectual disabilities compete in powerlifting events.

The bench press is divided into power and weightlifting categories. In powerlifting, the lifter places their head, torso (including hips), legs, and both heels on the bench, grips the bar with a thumb width not exceeding 81 cm between the index fingers, and after the referee's start signal, lowers the bar to the chest, holds it still for about one second, and then presses it upward.

In weightlifting, the lifter lies on the bench with the bar no more than 1 inch from the chest and lifts the bar to arm's length without the referee's signal.

Powerlifting is divided into squats and deadlifts. In squats, the bar is placed between the neck and back, and from a standing position, after the referee's start signal, the lifter squats down until the hips are below the knees and then stands up.

In deadlifts, the lifter grips the bar with both hands and lifts it over the legs with knees and back straight without the referee's signal.

The detailed events for the Jeonnam Disabled Sports Competition weightlifting are divided into one bench press event (for physical disabilities, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, amputations, and other disabilities) and three powerlifting events (for visual, hearing, and intellectual disabilities), with 10 weight classes each for men and women.

The competition allows each athlete up to three attempts, and rankings are determined by the highest record.

In the 2022 30th competition, in the men's bench press across seven weight classes, Mokpo won 2 gold medals, and Yeosu, Hwasun, Gwangyang, Naju, and Jindo each won one gold medal. In the women's bench press across three weight classes, Yeosu won 2 gold medals and Mokpo won 1 gold medal.

In men's powerlifting, in the visual disability category with one weight class, Suncheon won 1 gold medal; in the intellectual disability category with 10 weight classes, Yeongam won 3 gold medals, Naju and Mokpo each won 2 gold medals, and Sinan, Suncheon, and Jindo each won 1 gold medal; in the hearing disability category with 3 weight classes, Gangjin-gun won 2 gold medals and Boseong-gun won 1 gold medal.

In women's powerlifting, in the intellectual disability category with 4 weight classes, Yeosu, Naju, Yeongam, and Jangheung each won 1 gold medal, and in the hearing disability category with 1 weight class, Jindo won 1 gold medal.

The viewing point for the 31st competition is whether Mokpo City, which won 5 gold medals in the 30th competition, will once again win the most gold medals, or whether Yeosu City, Naju City, Yeongam-gun, and Jindo-gun, which each won more than 3 gold medals, will secure more gold medals.

The host, Wando-gun, showed good performance in the last competition, with 2 of the 3 participating athletes winning silver medals in the men's bench press 88 kg and 107 kg classes for amputations and other disabilities, and is expected to win gold medals at the 62nd Jeonnam Sports Festival.
