"Tteokbokki is Not Sindang-dong but Bongcheon-dong"…The Unexpected Foodie Neighborhood Picked by 'Danggeun'

Danggeun Market Reveals Local Favorite Restaurant Rankings by Food Type

The neighborhoods with the most local recommendations for representative Korean favorite foods such as Tteokbokki, Jokbal, and Gukbap have been revealed. On the 27th, Danggeun Market announced the rankings of neighborhoods densely packed with popular restaurants for each representative food based on recommendation data uploaded by local neighbors on its map service 'Danggeun Map.'

The area with the most local neighbor-recommended Tteokbokki restaurants, a national snack, was Bongcheon-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul. This was followed by Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, and in third place, Anyang-dong, Dongan-gu, Anyang-si, Gyeonggi-do.

The neighborhood with the most Sundae (Korean blood sausage) restaurants, which along with Tteokbokki forms the two major branches of Korean street food, was Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, famous as Sundae Town. Next were Bupyeong-dong, Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, and Juan-dong, Michuhol-gu, Incheon.

Although Jangchung-dong is the neighborhood that comes to mind when thinking of Jokbal (pig’s trotters), the neighborhood with the most Jokbal restaurants recommended by neighbors was once again Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, following Sundae. Second place was Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, and third place was Yeonsan-dong, Yeonje-gu, Busan.

The reason why Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, had more restaurant recommendations than other areas is analyzed to be because of the high proportion of young single-person households, which has rapidly established a culture of communication and interaction with various neighbors through local communities like Danggeun Market.

Since Agujjim (braised monkfish) mainly uses seafood as its main ingredient, coastal areas stood out. Yeonsan-dong, Yeonje-gu, Busan, and Banyeo-dong, Haeundae-gu, Busan held the first and second places respectively, followed by Ssangyong-dong, Seobuk-gu, Cheonan-si, Chungnam in third place, and Odong-dong, Masanhappo-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongnam in fourth place.

Some neighborhoods stood out for being loved as representative foods of their region and maintaining their reputation for a long time. Galbi (grilled ribs) took first place in Idong-myeon, Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, living up to the fame of 'Pocheon Idong Galbi.'

Moon Kyung-won, head of the regional business office at Danggeun Market, said, "Danggeun Map is created through the participation of local residents who verify their neighborhoods, so it is full of valuable local store information that is hard to find on portals or SNS, making it widely used not only by locals but also by visitors from other regions to find popular restaurants."
