CGV Suwon to Close on the 7th of Next Month
Megabox's New Branch to Debut in the Second Half of the Year
The owner of the Suwon Station cinema is changing from CGV to Megabox. A CGV official announced on the 26th, "CGV Suwon will cease operations after the 7th of next month."
CGV Suwon, located in the heart of the city with heavy foot traffic, has recorded high sales for the past 20 years. CGV invested generously with a long-term perspective. Unusually, it established three special screening rooms (IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX) and also underwent renovation work in 2015. However, in last year's bidding for the Suwon Station cinema operator conducted by AK Plaza, Megabox outbid CGV and was selected as the preferred negotiator. An AK Plaza official stated, "Megabox offered much better terms."
The new Megabox branch is expected to open in the second half of this year. The contract has not yet been finalized. An AK Plaza official said, "We are negotiating detailed matters such as the lease period with Megabox."
Megabox, which currently operates four branches in Suwon (Yeongtong, Suwon, Suwon Nammun, Suwon Homaesil), plans to use the new branch as a hub. They aim to elevate the cultural level not only in the surrounding area but also in the southern Gyeonggi region. A Megabox official said, "We have not yet decided on specific utilization plans such as installing special screening rooms (Dolby Cinema)," but added, "We will bring new cultural vitality to the local community."
Suwon Station has the highest foot traffic in Gyeonggi Province, with an average of 113,000 people per day. It is predicted that even more crowds will gather with the sequential opening of the GTX-A and C lines starting next year.
