Opposition: "Jeonse Fraud Measures Must Be Centered on Victims"
Park Hong-geun, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, blamed the People Power Party and the government for the failure to pass the Special Act on Jeonse Fraud during the April extraordinary session of the National Assembly. The Democratic Party urged the government to take responsible measures for the victims.
At the party's Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the 26th, Floor Leader Park said, "The Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee meeting and the plenary session submission for the passage of the Special Act on Jeonse Fraud in April were canceled due to the complacent and delayed response of the ruling People Power Party and the government," adding, "I cannot help but criticize the People Power Party for saying one thing and doing another."
He stated, "The special act proposed by the Democratic Party was prepared to reflect the desperate voices of the victims," and added, "Although the government and ruling party were somewhat late, they have announced policies to help the victims, so it is just a matter of promptly discussing and passing the already submitted bill."

Regarding the failure to pass the related law at the plenary session on the 27th, Floor Leader Park placed the responsibility on the People Power Party. He said, "The People Power Party changed their stance and refused to agree on the schedule for the standing committee meeting," adding, "When it was an urgent livelihood bill, they were the first to say it should be handled quickly, but when the opposition proposed related bills, they not only failed to properly review them but opposed and delayed discussions by labeling them as mere populism."
He emphasized, "To minimize damage, the bill should be submitted to the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee within this week to start discussions as soon as possible," and added, "The plenary session in May should be convened as soon as possible to ensure the Special Act on Jeonse Fraud is passed."
Lee Su-jin, spokesperson for the Democratic Party floor, criticized the government’s stance against ‘compensation first, recourse later’ in a statement.
Spokesperson Lee said, "Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong only insisted on the impossibility of ‘compensation first, recourse later’ for victims of jeonse fraud and walked away," and criticized, "Minister Won’s absurd policy of offering more loans to victims at risk of losing their loans is shocking. His remark that victims can just sell the house if the price rises after the auction is heartbreaking for the victims."
Lee added, "Jeonse fraud is not limited to specific areas such as the metropolitan area but has already become a nationwide social disaster," urging, "The government must please put the victims at the center and prepare countermeasures." She further added, "I hope the government listens to the victims’ voices asking, ‘Please create a good precedent where the state stands together with the people from a humble position.’"
