According to major foreign media including AP, bombs fell on Belgorod, a western Russian city about 40km from Ukraine, on the night of the 20th.

The 340,000 residents of Belgorod were thrown into fear as bombs dropped by their own country's bombers exploded.

Initially, Russian authorities concealed the fact that the bombs were dropped by their own bombers and blamed Ukraine for the incident, but eventually admitted to the accidental bombing.

According to residents, after the bombs exploded, a low whistling sound was heard, nearby apartment buildings shook, and windows were shattered. A 20-meter diameter crater was formed on the road where the bomb fell. This road is adjacent to an area densely lined with apartment buildings, which could have caused serious casualties. Vehicles parked along the roadside were severely damaged by the blast impact, and one car even crashed into the roof of a nearby commercial building.

The Russian Ministry of Defense admitted about an hour after the explosion that it was an accidental bombing by one of its own Air Force aircraft. They issued a statement that one of the Su-34 bombers belonging to their Air Force was responsible for the accidental bombing.

The Russian Ministry of Defense did not disclose detailed information, but military experts pointed out that the bomb dropped this time was likely a powerful 500kg bomb. They judged that the bomb was intended to target underground facilities. Experts noted that the bomb was designed to detonate with a slight delay after hitting the ground, rather than exploding immediately.
