Ulsan City Strengthens Radiation Testing in Preparation for Japanese Nuclear Plant Contaminated Water Discharge

All Distributed Agricultural and Marine Products Samples Safe This Year

Health and Environment Research Institute Increases Inspection Frequency from 2 to 4 Times

Radiation tests on seafood distributed in Ulsan this year have all been found to be safe.

The Ulsan City Health and Environment Research Institute announced on the 23rd that no radiation was detected in any samples from radiation tests conducted on distributed seafood, agricultural products, and processed foods from January to April 15 this year.

The inspection covered a total of 140 cases, including 106 seafood samples, 12 agricultural products, and 22 processed foods, with no radioactive iodine (131I) or cesium (134Cs, 137Cs) detected in any of them.

In preparation for the discharge of contaminated water from Japanese nuclear power plants, the institute has expanded radiation testing of seafood from twice a month to four times a month starting this year to alleviate citizens' concerns about radioactive contamination in food.

To ensure citizens' right to know, the radiation test results are disclosed on the Ulsan City Health and Environment Research Institute's website.

The institute stated, "We will continue to do our best to ensure that citizens can purchase safe agricultural and marine products free from radiation by strengthening the radiation inspection system and safety management in cooperation with related departments in response to the release of radioactive contaminated water from Japan."

Radiation tests on imported Japanese food products are currently conducted comprehensively by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, which detected trace amounts in two processed food cases and one agricultural product last year, and one processed food case this year, all of which were returned.

Results of radiation tests on imported Japanese food products conducted by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety can be checked on the Imported Food Radiation Safety Information website.
