Hyundai Mobis Successfully Conducts Real-World Road Test of 'e-Corner System' Demonstration Vehicle

Hyundai Mobis has successfully conducted on-road driving tests with a demonstration vehicle equipped with the core future mobility technology, the 'e-Corner System.'

The 'e-Corner System' developed by Hyundai Mobis is a future mobility convergence technology that modularizes and integrates the drive motor, rotation steering function, and electronic brake system, mounting them on each wheel. It is considered a key element in realizing passenger and logistics transport mobility linked with electrification and autonomous driving.

On the 23rd, Hyundai Mobis released a video showing the Ioniq 5 vehicle equipped with the 'e-Corner System' running on the Hyundai Mobis Seosan Driving Test Center and nearby roads, demonstrating various driving modes.

In the video, the 'e-Corner System' demonstration vehicle drives on test tracks and public roads using various driving modes. It showcases 'crab driving,' where the wheels turn 90 degrees and the vehicle moves sideways like a crab, and 'zero turn,' where all four wheels are deployed at different angles to rotate in place like a figure skating spin. Crab driving enables anyone to perform parallel parking, which was previously a challenge in tight parking conditions, without complicated steering maneuvers. Additionally, in difficult situations where the vehicle must back out of a dead-end, a single zero turn allows easy transition to forward driving.

The video also features 'diagonal driving,' where the vehicle moves obliquely at a 45-degree angle, and 'pivot turn,' where the vehicle freely rotates by a desired angle around an arbitrary point inside or outside the vehicle designated by the driver. Using diagonal driving allows smooth overtaking of the vehicle ahead, and pivot turn enables the vehicle to turn 90 degrees for front parking.

For these reasons, the e-Corner System is regarded as an innovative technology that overcomes the limitations of mobility driving. There are no mass production cases worldwide in this field yet. Hyundai Mobis is evaluated to be ahead of global competitors through its independent development capabilities of core components and the convergence of each system.

Chun Jae-seung, head of Hyundai Mobis FTCI, said, "We are enhancing the technological completeness of the e-Corner System to proactively respond to future mobility demands," adding, "We plan to solidify our vision to leap forward as a 'mobility platform provider' by securing diversified customized mobility solutions applicable to autonomous driving and PBVs."
