Choi Ho-kwon, Yeongdeungpo District Mayor, Volunteers for Meal Service on Disability Day
On the morning of the 20th, Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, volunteered to serve meals for low-income disabled individuals at the Yeongdeungpo Disabled Love Sharing House in celebration of Disability Day.
This meal service was organized to commemorate Disability Day and to reflect on the meaning of living together and sharing with neighbors.
Mayor Choi Ho-kwon stated, “April 20th was designated as Disability Day because April is the season when all living things revive throughout the year,” adding, “Just as the dormant life awakens in the warm spring after a cold winter, I hope you overcome your disabilities and take a firm step forward.”
Park Kang-su, Mapo District Mayor, Visits the ‘1st Mapo People Festival’ Site on the Afternoon of the 20th
On the afternoon of the 20th, Park Kang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, visited the experiential promotion booths set up at the ‘1st Mapo People Festival’ held in Hongdae.
For the ‘Mapo People Festival,’ 18 organizations including the Comprehensive Welfare Center for the Disabled prepared 25 promotional experiential booths offering a variety of attractions and activities such as wheelchair repair, ▲ flea markets, ▲ exhibitions of disabled artists’ works, ▲ sign language interpretation promotion, ▲ Braille experience, and ▲ disabled sports Shulren experience.
Mayor Park personally tried various experiences and said, “The experiential booths are filled with interesting content that helps eliminate prejudice against disabilities.”
Gwanak District Holds the 43rd ‘Disability Day’ Commemorative Event
On April 20th, over 600 residents including disabled individuals and their families gathered for the Disability Day commemorative event
Held under the theme ‘No Discrimination, Equal Opportunity, Greater Happiness’
Gwanak District (Mayor Park Jun-hee) hosted the ‘43rd Disability Day’ commemorative event on April 20th at the Gateball Dome in Nakseongdae Park, organized by the Gwanak District Disabled Persons’ Association.
Disability Day is a legal commemorative day established annually on April 20th to broaden understanding of disabled persons and to encourage their rehabilitation motivation.
Under the slogan ‘No Discrimination, Equal Opportunity, Greater Happiness,’ the event was attended by over 600 disabled individuals and their families, featuring ▲ an award ceremony recognizing contributors to local community disability welfare ▲ guest speeches ▲ invited singer performances ▲ impromptu singing and talent shows.
Additionally, the Gwanak Police Station provided a ‘Voice Phishing Crime Prevention Education’ session aimed at preventing various crimes targeting disabled individuals.
Mayor Park Jun-hee of Gwanak District said, “With the goal of ‘a warm companionship for an inclusive city where everyone is happy,’ we will diligently implement policies for a better life for over 20,000 disabled individuals and their families,” adding, “We promise to continuously communicate and stand firmly alongside all disabled persons to ensure they live without inconvenience.”
Dongdaemun District Hosts the 43rd Disability Day ‘Grand Festival’
On Disability Day, April 20th, the Seoul Metropolitan Association of the Physically Disabled Dongdaemun Branch hosted the ‘Grand Festival’
Meaningful events including congratulatory performances by disabled performers, awards for disability welfare contributors, and delivery of living support funds
Dongdaemun District (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) held the ‘Grand Festival’ on the afternoon of the 20th at the multipurpose auditorium on the 2nd floor of the district office to commemorate the 43rd Disability Day.
Disability Day was established to improve awareness of disabled persons and to enhance their rehabilitation motivation. In South Korea, April 20th has been officially designated as Disability Day since 1991.
Celebrating its 43rd year, the ‘Disability Grand Festival’ was hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Association of the Physically Disabled Dongdaemun Branch (Chairman Choi Jung-seok). Approximately 800 guests including disabled individuals and volunteers attended. The event featured a pre-ceremony performance, an award ceremony for disability welfare contributors, and congratulatory performances by disabled performers.
Additionally, nine individuals were selected from various disability organizations to receive living support funds of 300,000 KRW each and scholarships totaling 2.7 million KRW. A job counseling booth for disabled employment was also operated to support disabled individuals’ independence.
Mayor Lee Pil-hyung of Dongdaemun District said, “I hope everyone attending the 43rd Disability Day event has an enjoyable time,” adding, “We will focus on improving awareness of disabilities and enhancing disability welfare to ensure all residents can live happily without discrimination.”
During Disability Week (April 17?21), Dongdaemun District held spring outings for disability organizations and facilities. The Dongdaemun District Comprehensive Welfare Center for the Disabled (Director Jung Eun-ah) also hosted the ‘Together Side by Side’ sharing event, offering a rich program including disability awareness campaigns, badge making, and life photo sessions.

Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Seoul’s Gangseo District, attended the ‘43rd Disability Day Ceremony’ on the 20th and pledged to support true independence as a reliable partner for disabled individuals.
Mayor Kim said, “April 20th was designated as Disability Day because April is the season when all living things revive throughout the year,” adding, “Just as the dormant life awakens in the warm spring after a cold winter, I hope you overcome your disabilities and take a firm step forward.”
He continued, “To establish a foundation where disabled individuals can stand independently as equal members of society rather than mere recipients of unilateral support, we have launched the ‘Gangseo Donghaeng’ project, where disabled individuals operate YouTube channels to generate income. The protagonists of ‘Gangseo Donghaeng’ are the disabled, and all profits generated will be used solely for disability welfare.”
The ‘43rd Disability Day Ceremony’ was held successfully with about 1,000 attendees including Mayor Kim Tae-woo, disabled individuals and their families, disability organizations, facility workers, and local residents.
The ceremony, consisting of a first part with commemorative events and a second part with celebratory performances, proceeded with ▲ reading of the Disability Human Rights Charter ▲ awarding of disability welfare contributors ▲ commemorative speech by Kim Yong-je, President of the Gangseo District Disabled Organizations Federation ▲ congratulatory speech by Mayor Kim Tae-woo ▲ and celebratory performances.
Notably, the event featured a promotional booth for the ‘Gangseo Donghaeng’ project supporting disabled independence and minimized excessive guest protocol to ensure disabled individuals could fully enjoy Disability Day, receiving great positive feedback from the disabled community.
Mayor Kim Tae-woo said, “We will continuously strive to make Gangseo the happiest and brightest city for disabled individuals nationwide by developing policies for them,” adding, “I hope everyone can shake off worries and have a healing time.”
Guro District Holds the ‘43rd Disability Day’ Ceremony
Guro District held the ‘43rd Disability Day’ ceremony on the 20th at the Premium Wedding Proposal Grand Ballroom.
The ceremony was divided into two parts and attended by about 500 people including Moon Heon-il, Guro District Mayor, disability organizations, and disability welfare facility workers.
On this day, Mayor Moon awarded certificates of appreciation to 21 disabled individuals, meritorious workers, and volunteers who demonstrated exemplary leadership. The event concluded with performances including fan dance, gayageum music, and invited singer performances.
