Hwasun-gun Hosts Prehistoric Installation Art Exhibition

Installation and Exhibition at Pingmaebawi Area During Goin-dol Festival Period

On the occasion of the 2023 Hwasun Dolmen Festival, Hwasun-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 19th that it will hold an installation art exhibition themed on the prehistoric era at the Pingmae Rock area within the dolmen site.

This prehistoric installation art exhibition is overseen by artist Lee Gi-won as the general planner, featuring a total of six artists including Kim Kyung-chun, Jung Il, and Wi Jae-hwan, who will present five sculptural works imbued with history and themes.

In particular, this exhibition showcases works across various genres including media and installation art, allowing viewers to glimpse the artists' identities concerning nature, environment, and humanity through the flow of time encompassing the prehistoric era, the present, and the future.

Among them, artist Kim Kyung-chun’s work titled ‘Life’ is a modern reinterpretation of totemistic culture, combining figures appearing in prehistoric petroglyphs with the Paljureong (eight-branched jade ornament) excavated in Hwasun.

The collaborative work ‘STONE’ by artists Baek Sang-ok and Lee Sun-hee expresses the light of Hwasun’s history steadfastly moving into the future, like the ever-unchanging dolmen, by applying various colors onto the essential form of the dolmen as it transcends time.

Son Man-seok’s work ‘Pingmae Rock and Mago Halmeom’ vividly unfolds the legend of Mago Halmeom associated with Pingmae Rock, the largest dolmen site in Hwasun, through media art.

Additionally, visitors can directly experience the works ‘Dreamer (Clumsy Traveler)’ and ‘Fractal_Past, Present, Future’ at the festival venue.

An official stated, “This art exhibition was planned with the prehistoric era, represented by dolmens, as its fundamental theme,” adding, “We hope it will be a time to appreciate the artworks during the blossoming spring and reinterpret the meanings contained within them in your own way.”
