Improving Surrounding Scenery to Highlight the Historical Symbolism of Siheung Haenggung
Replacement of Ginkgo Market Gate, Maintenance of Green Strips, Installation of Scenic Sculptures, Sidewalk Block Maintenance, etc.
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon) announced that it will implement the ‘Siheung Haenggung Historical and Cultural Preservation Landscape Project.’
Siheung Haenggung is a temporary palace where King Jeongjo, the 22nd king of the Joseon Dynasty, stayed overnight during his procession to Hwaseong Hyeonryungwon in 1795 (Eulmyo year) to pay respects to his father, Crown Prince Sado. It served as a space for communication where he gathered the people and listened to their stories.
This project was selected in August 2021 through a landscape improvement contest held by Seoul City. After consulting with Seoul City, forming a resident council for the landscape project, holding resident briefings, and coordinating with related departments, the basic and detailed designs were completed in January this year, and the project is now ready to proceed in earnest.
The project location covers the Geumha-ro area (from Ginkgo Intersection to Beomil Transport) and the Ginkgo-ro area (from Ginkgo Market to Daewoodang Pharmacy), totaling a 760-meter section. The main project components include ▲replacement of the Ginkgo Market gate ▲maintenance of green strips ▲installation of scenic sculptures (letter sculptures, landscape lighting, etc.) ▲installation of fences, and sidewalk block maintenance. The total project cost is 1.4 billion KRW (950 million KRW from the city, 450 million KRW from the district), and the project period is from April to September 2023.
Geumcheon-gu commemorates Siheung Haenggung and its historical symbolism by hosting events such as the ‘Joint Reenactment of King Jeongjo’s Royal Procession’ and the ‘Ginkgo Danggo Shrine,’ as well as operating the ‘Siheung Haenggung Exhibition Hall.’
Through this project, Geumcheon-gu aims to create a specialized street that serves as a hub for various cultural events and projects, encouraging residents’ interest in the history of Geumcheon-gu and active participation in events.
Yoo Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, stated, “We will complete the project before the joint reenactment event of King Jeongjo’s royal procession in October,” and added, “We hope the Siheung Haenggung Historical and Cultural Preservation Landscape Project will serve as an opportunity to promote Geumcheon-gu’s unique historical and cultural resources.”
