‘An island where even the weary fisherman's presence is embraced by the waves... a territory where only painful and bitter moments are etched like scars...’.
On the 17th, Ulleung-gun, Gyeongbuk, emotionally released a ‘Dokdo promotional video’ reflecting the sentiments of its residents.
This video is praised for capturing the heartfelt feelings of the Ulleung residents who protected Dokdo, rather than focusing on the heavy themes typically shown in existing promotional content asserting sovereignty over Dokdo.
The 1 minute and 27 seconds long video, edited to the rhythm of poetry, features scenes of the Dokdo Volunteer Defense Corps, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo landscapes without any narration. Despite its short length, the subtitles and visuals faithfully convey emotion.
Behind the subtitle “Because of that sorrow, someone guarded it as if in a desperate cry,” the video shows Commander Hong Chil-soon paying respects to a fallen member and turning away, leaving a lingering emotional impact.
Created for use on SNS and mobile platforms, this video was produced to indirectly promote the ‘4th Island Day’ event to be held on August 8 on Ulleungdo and the ‘Hometown Love Donation Program’.
Nam Han-kwon, the governor of Ulleung-gun, said, “Dokdo is a place where the nation's sorrows and grief are still ongoing, and now all citizens must become Ulleung residents to remove the sadness and protect this land.”
