SKT Develops Next-Generation Broadcasting Transmission Platform... Enters US Broadcasting Market

Supply to Sinclair, the Largest US Media Group
Targeting the Global Broadcasting Market Starting from the United States

SK Telecom is entering the U.S. broadcasting market.

On the 18th, SKT announced that it sold a next-generation broadcasting transmission platform utilizing Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) technology to Sinclair, the largest media group in the U.S. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is a technology that exchanges data with a cloud close to the user’s device rather than a central data center. Based on MEC technology, SKT virtualized the broadcasting transmission system into a cloud-based platform and developed a Media Edge platform that allows a central broadcasting station to efficiently operate regional broadcasting systems, and has started sales.

SKT Develops Next-Generation Broadcasting Transmission Platform... Enters US Broadcasting Market

SKT’s Media Edge platform is a product that virtualizes media transmission equipment by installing SKT’s MEC solution and Castd’ella (a joint venture between SK Square and Sinclair)’s broadcasting software on servers from global IT company Dell Technologies. This is the first time it has been introduced to the broadcasting market.

The biggest feature of the Media Edge platform is the virtualization technology that connects the central broadcasting station with regional broadcasting transmission systems. Previously, to increase the number of channels at a regional broadcasting station or add new functions, it was necessary to purchase and install related broadcasting transmission equipment. By utilizing the Media Edge platform, this can be easily resolved by remotely installing new applications in the cloud within regional broadcasting stations from the central location. For broadcasters, this reduces equipment purchase costs and increases system operational efficiency.

Additionally, the Media Edge platform supports the data transmission function of the UHD broadcasting standard ATSC 3.0, established by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) in the U.S. This allows broadcasters to transmit data through the broadcasting network according to their desired schedule. In other words, in addition to the existing video and audio broadcasting services, it becomes possible to provide services such as region-specific advertisements and real-time alerts for emergencies like disasters.

SKT plans to expand the Media Edge platform market targeting North American and domestic broadcasters where ATSC 3.0-based broadcasting has been commercialized. It also plans to expand its business to the global broadcasting market that is scheduled to adopt ATSC 3.0 in the future.

Ha Min-yong, Chief Digital Officer (CDO) of SKT, stated, “Through cooperation with Sinclair, a leading North American broadcaster, and Dell, which has a global sales network, we will spread next-generation broadcasting service innovation worldwide starting from the U.S.”

Del Parks, Chief Technology Officer of Sinclair, said, “By utilizing the cutting-edge Media Edge platform built through collaboration with SKT and Castd’ella, we will create new business opportunities in the U.S. broadcasting market.”
