Ulleung-gun, Gyeongbuk, has been selected for the 'K Tourism Island Development Project' conducted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The K Tourism Island Development Project held a contest targeting inhabited islands not connected to the mainland, in line with changing travel trends.
A total of 14 islands applied, and the 'Island Tourism Committee,' composed of external experts in tourism, marine, environment, and ecology, conducted the evaluation. Through three rounds of assessment focusing on the island's value and potential, plan feasibility, expected effects, and sustainability, five islands were finally selected.
Ulleung-gun plans to invest a total of 12 billion KRW over four years under three themes: 'Activity Ulleung,' 'Making Smart Ulleung,' and 'it is Ulleung,' utilizing its unique natural ecology and humanities resources to create Ulleung Island-style attractions, sights, and food experiences.
The project will include creating experiential spaces, hosting four-season festivals, and developing a smart integrated tourism app with multilingual support to welcome potential tourists and foreigners, aiming to showcase Ulleung Island effectively.
Nam Han-kwon, the county governor, emphasized, "We will use this island development project as an opportunity to transform Ulleung into a world-class tourist destination where visitors can experience its pristine ecology."
