A teenage female student live-streamed her fall to death from a high-rise building in Gangnam on social networking service (SNS).
On the 17th, the Gangnam Police Station announced that at around 2:30 p.m. the previous day, a teenage student, Ms. A, jumped to her death from the rooftop of a high-rise building on Teheran-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
Ms. A had announced through an SNS live broadcast the day before that she would live-stream her jump, and about 20 viewers who saw this reported it to the police and fire department. Around 2:20 p.m., police arrived at the building where Ms. A was located, but during the process of entering the rooftop, Ms. A jumped. This was broadcast live through the SNS live stream.
The police have determined that there is no suspicion of homicide. A police official stated, "CCTV footage confirmed that Ms. A moved alone," and added, "There are no signs of school violence, but an investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances of the incident."
However, this incident has become a topic of controversy in online communities. One online community user wrote a post claiming to have been with Ms. A before her death. It is also reported that the user knew about Ms. A’s plan to jump and, feeling scared, left the scene.
