Resolution Urging Enactment of Special Measures Act
Members of the Sacheon City Council in Gyeongnam strongly condemned the discharge of radioactive contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan into the ocean.
At the 2nd plenary session of the 269th Sacheon City Council, the council unanimously adopted the “Resolution Urging the Enactment of a Special Act to Prohibit Damage from the Discharge of Contaminated Water from Japanese Nuclear Power Plants and to Establish Countermeasures.”
Through the resolution, the Sacheon City Council stated, “The Japanese government officially decided in 2021 to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean and still insists on carrying out the discharge in June or July.”
It further demanded the Japanese government to “immediately withdraw the decision to discharge nuclear power plant contaminated water into the ocean, which is opposed by both its own citizens and neighboring countries, and to reestablish a contaminated water treatment plan based on experts’ opinions.”
Moreover, it urged, “Our government should take all possible measures to stop Japan’s discharge of contaminated water, urgently enact a special law to strengthen safety inspections in preparation for the inflow of contaminated water, and protect the health of the people.”
In particular, it requested active measures at the Sacheon city level, stating, “Prepare comprehensive countermeasures against all industrial damages including the collapse of the fisheries industry and contamination of drinking water caused by the discharge of contaminated water, and form a consultative body with local governments facing similar situations to respond jointly.”
The adopted resolution will be delivered to nine institutions, including the Presidential Office, the National Assembly, central government ministries, and the Governor of Gyeongsangnam-do.
