Park Byung-gyu, Mayor of Gwangsan District Office in Gwangju Metropolitan City, expressed that “a new history of coexistence and hope has begun” regarding the passage of the special law for the relocation of the military airport, the region’s greatest long-standing wish, at the National Assembly plenary session on the 13th.
Mayor Park of Gwangsan District released a statement saying, “The path for essential national funding support for the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport has been opened,” and added, “I thank National Assembly members Lee Yong-bin and Song Gap-seok, Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jung, and all the citizens of Gwangju who united their efforts at every critical moment until the National Assembly plenary session resolution was achieved.”
He continued, “The special law for the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport marks the beginning of a new history,” emphasizing, “It is a history of coexistence and hope.”
He also stated, “The newly established military airport will become a gateway of opportunity where goods and people gather,” and “The old site will become a new space embracing carbon neutrality and a city true to Gwangju’s identity.”
Furthermore, he said, “The protagonists creating a history of coexistence and hope for Gwangju and Jeonnam are none other than our city and provincial residents,” stressing, “We must continuously meet and engage in dialogue to find good solutions and pioneer ways to help each other so that the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport bears fruit.”
He added, “I hope the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport becomes a symbol of social consensus that opens a new era of coexistence and hope,” and “Gwangsan District, which has long hosted the military airport, will also faithfully fulfill its historical responsibilities. On behalf of 420,000 Gwangsan citizens, I once again welcome the National Assembly plenary session’s resolution on the special law.”
