Jangseong-gun Conducts 'Pinworm Infection Status Survey' for Infants and Toddlers

Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 13th that it will conduct a "pinworm infection status survey" targeting 250 infants and toddlers in local daycare centers and kindergartens until the 19th.

Pinworm, a parasitic disease classified as a legally designated 4th-class infectious disease, is transmitted by ingesting pinworm eggs that are attached to hands, food, or toys.

When infected, itching around the anus, dermatitis, and nocturnal enuresis may occur. It can also cause abdominal pain and diarrhea. Although it can be completely cured with medication, reinfection can occur at any time after the initial infection, so caution is required.

The county plans to conduct pinworm tests twice a year, in the first and second halves, by attaching and then removing a pin tape to the anus to collect samples, which are then examined under a microscope to identify eggs or worms.

The county has distributed pin tapes for testing to interested institutions, and once samples are collected, they will be sent to the Jeollanam-do Health and Environment Research Institute for analysis. If pinworm infection is confirmed, medication and health education will be provided.

A health center official said, "It is best to conduct the test immediately after waking up in the morning. If the test is done right after showering or if the prescribed method is not followed, the reliability of the test may decrease."
