Implementation of the 'Fruit Tree Pruning Branch Collection and Disposal Pilot Project'
Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, will conduct a 'Fruit Tree Pruning Branch Collection and Disposal Pilot Project' throughout April to handle fruit tree pruning branches generated at local orchards.
Pruned branches are considered agricultural by-products and classified as household waste. However, due to agricultural practices (such as pest and disease control) and the burden of disposal costs, illegal open burning is widespread.
Accordingly, Cheongsong-gun has launched the 'Fruit Tree Pruning Branch Collection and Disposal Pilot Project' to alleviate farmers' inconveniences, prevent forest fires caused by illegal burning, and increase the recycling rate of waste resources.
If farmers bring pruned apple tree branches or trunks, which have been left unattended due to difficulties in disposing of agricultural by-products (fruit tree pruning branches), to the 'Pruning Branch Collection Center' in Duhyeon-ri, Hyeonseo-myeon (formerly the entrance of Yeongcheon Water Tunnel), they will be processed free of charge. Once a certain amount is collected at the center, the branches will be shredded on-site using a mobile shredder and then transported to a recycling facility to be used as eco-friendly raw materials.
County Governor Yoon Kyung-hee stated, "This pilot project will reduce air pollution caused by illegal burning and establish a stable collection system for fruit tree pruning branches." She added, "We hope farmers will show great interest and help promote the project for its success."
