Leading the Reduction of Single-Use Plastics in Public Institutions
Jo Gyu-il, mayor of Jinju City in Gyeongnam Province, pledged to reduce the use of disposable products by participating in the "Disposable Products Zero Challenge."
Launched on February 27 by Han Hwa-jin, Minister of Environment, the "Disposable Products Zero Challenge" encourages public interest and participation by posting commitments to reduce disposable product use on social media platforms of various organizations and nominating the next participants.
Mayor Jo joined the challenge after being nominated by Kim Hoe-cheon, president of Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd., and nominated the Korea Land Safety Management Institute and Namhae County as the next relay participants.
Since signing the "Making Gyeongnam Free of Disposable Products" agreement with 12 public institutions in Jinju City on February 20, Jinju City has been striving to reduce disposable product use and increase the use of reusable containers.
Jinju City uses reusable cups for serving visitors at its departments and town offices, and during the "2023 Jinju Asia Weightlifting Championships" from May 3 to 13, reusable cups and plates will be provided in certain areas such as the basement first-floor lounge to help reduce disposable product use.
Mayor Jo said, "I hope that public institutions in Jinju City will take the lead in reducing disposable product use and that a circular economy lifestyle culture will spread throughout the region. Jinju City will provide full support to achieve this."
