Urging the Enactment of a Special Act for Countermeasures Against Nuclear Power Plant Contaminated Water Damage
The Gurye County Council in Jeollanam-do (Chairman Yoo Si-moon) announced on the 12th that it held the 280th monthly meeting of the Jeollanam-do City and County Council Chairmen's Association at the Gurye Baekdudaegan Ecological Education Center.
The meeting was hosted by the Jeollanam-do City and County Council Chairmen's Association and organized by the Gurye County Council, with about 80 attendees including Kang Pil-gu, chairman of the Yeonggwang County Council and the association chairman, chairmen of 20 city and county councils in Jeollanam-do, and Kim Soon-ho, the governor of Gurye County.
The association unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by Kim Young-gyu, chairman of the Yeosu City Council, urging the enactment of a special law for countermeasures against damage caused by the discharge of contaminated water from Japanese nuclear power plants, calling on the Japanese government to withdraw its decision to discharge contaminated water and to reestablish a treatment plan.
It demanded that the government take all possible measures in close cooperation with the international community to ensure that the Japanese government withdraws the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Additionally, it urged the prompt designation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries as the responsible department to conduct radiation safety inspections, prepare specific compensation plans for fishermen affected by the damage, and enact a special law to protect the health of all citizens.
In accordance with the Local Autonomy Act revised in 2021, the association also resolved to entrust a specialized institution to conduct a capacity-building training for policy support officers in May to strengthen their policy capabilities and support efficient legislative activities.
Meanwhile, Kim Young-gyu, chairman of the Yeosu City Council, received the Korea Local Legislative Service Award presented by the Korea City and County Autonomy Council Chairmen's Association for his contributions to the development of local autonomy and the enhancement of the status of local councils. Moon Seung-ok, a member of the Gurye County Council, received the Local Legislative Service Award from the Jeollanam-do City and County Council Chairmen's Association for his contributions to establishing an advanced council model and regional community development.
A plaque of appreciation was awarded to Kim Soon-ho, governor of Gurye County, for his active support in the operation of the association and contributions to the development of local councils.
