Naver Webtoon announced on the 12th that it will hold a web novel contest with Moonpia, offering a total prize of 400 million KRW. Naver Webtoon and Moonpia aim to discover high-quality intellectual property (IP) through this contest to strengthen their competitiveness.
The contest will accept web novels in various genres including ▲Fantasy ▲Martial Arts ▲Modern ▲Sports ▲Alternate History. Submissions will be accepted from May 10 to June 18, followed by judging, and the winners will be announced on July 19. The winning works will be exclusively published first on Moonpia and then additionally released on Naver Series.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary last year, Moonpia is a leading platform for aspiring fantasy and martial arts web novel writers in Korea. The number of works serialized on Moonpia reaches approximately 70,000. Moonpia has contributed to revitalizing the web novel ecosystem by introducing a transparent settlement system with per-episode payment, allowing amateur writers to secure sales revenue.
Naver Webtoon and Moonpia have been conducting joint web novel contests since last year. Popular works such as "Starting with 13 Hidden Traits" and "Farming Alone at the Top" were discovered last year. Since works serialized on Moonpia and Naver Series ensure both accessibility and opportunities for authors to generate income, it is expected to contribute to discovering diverse works from skilled established and new writers and expanding the web novel market base.
Son Je-ho, CEO of Moonpia, said, “Interest in web novel contests has grown even more as we conduct the joint contest with Naver Webtoon,” adding, “We will strive to help the discovered works meet more readers and provide a better creative environment for authors.”
Park Je-yeon, General Leader of Naver Web Novel, said, “As cases of web novels being adapted into webtoons and videos and achieving success increase, the importance of web novel IP in the content market is gradually rising,” and added, “We hope aspiring writers who want to showcase their unique stories to a wider world will take on the challenge.”
