Taste Royal Medicinal Tea and Traditional Sweets at Gyeongbokgung Palace

'Gyeongbokgung Saenggwabang' in Sojubang Area Until June

An experiential event to taste royal medicinal teas and traditional sweets will be held at Gyeongbokgung Palace. The Cultural Heritage Administration's Office of Royal Palaces and Tombs and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation will conduct the 'Gyeongbokgung Saenggwabang' from the 20th of this month to June 28th in the Sojubang area. Saenggwabang was a pavilion where special dishes for the Joseon royal family were prepared. It was also called Saengmulbang or Saegotbang.

This year, ten types of royal court sweets recorded in the "Joseon Wangjo Sillok" and "Yorok," along with six types of royal medicinal teas, will be showcased. The representative menu items are Chodujeomjeungbyeonggwa and Gyeongokda-eum. The former is a rice cake made with roasted red beans, jujubes, and pine nuts. According to the "Jinchanuigwe" and "Jinyeonuigwe," which document various banquets and events of the Joseon dynasty, it was served at royal feasts and King Gojong's 50th birthday celebration.

The latter is a dish that allows drinking Gyeongokgo, a rare medicine likened to jade, in tea form. It appears in prescriptions in the internal medicine section of the "Donguibogam" and is known for its excellent effects on aging, chronic fatigue, and improving digestive functions.

The Office of Royal Palaces and Tombs will also present Yakgwa, Chamoejeonggwa, Jatbaksan, Maeyeopgwa, Gotgam Danji, Juak, Ssalgangjeong, Sagwa Jeonggwa, Samgyulda, Gamgukda, Damgangda, Omijada, and Jehotang.

The event will be held four times a day at 10:00 AM, 11:40 AM, 1:50 PM, and 3:30 PM. It lasts about 1 hour and 10 minutes and will not operate on Tuesdays when Gyeongbokgung is closed, nor on the 31st of next month. Reservations can be made through Ticketlink. For those aged 65 and over, persons with disabilities, and national merit recipients, reservations can also be made by phone.
