NCSoft has filed a lawsuit claiming that Kakao Games' new title, "ArcheAge War," infringes on the copyright of its game "Lineage 2M."
On the 5th, NCSoft announced that it had submitted a complaint to the Seoul Central District Court against Kakao Games and XL Games for copyright infringement and unfair competition.
NCSoft explained that it confirmed that "ArcheAge War," released on the 21st of last month by Kakao Games and XL Games, copied numerous contents and systems from "Lineage 2M." After analysis and discussions with internal and external experts, the company decided to pursue legal action to protect its IP.
NCSoft judged that "ArcheAge War" went beyond mere genre similarity and unlawfully appropriated and plagiarized NCSoft's intellectual property (IP). Since the release of "ArcheAge War," gamers have pointed out similarities with "Lineage 2M."
An NCSoft representative stated, "IP is the result of long-term research and development (R&D) and is a core asset of a company that deserves proper protection," adding, "We will continue our efforts and responses to protect our IP. This is a necessary measure to strengthen the competitiveness of the Korean game industry and to clearly establish standards for game content copyrights."
