The city of Yongin in Gyeonggi Province is actively promoting the establishment of the 'Semiconductor Meister High School' (tentative name).
On the 5th, Yongin City announced that it has consecutively signed business agreements with 40 semiconductor-related companies, including Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Lam Research, and Surplus Global, to designate and foster the Yongin Semiconductor Meister High School.
Previously, the city signed agreements with SK Hynix on the 8th of last month, Samsung Electronics on the 14th of the same month, and Lam Research Korea on the 3rd of this month. Lam Research is a global semiconductor etching equipment company headquartered in the United States.
In addition, the city has also signed written agreements with 37 semiconductor-related small and medium-sized parts and materials companies, including Surplus Global Co., Ltd., Robot & Design, and SEMES.
Under these agreements, these companies will support the designation of Yongin Semiconductor Meister High School and the development of educational curricula for talent cultivation, online education courses, on- and offline job skill guidance for teachers, and practical training for students.
Furthermore, a plan will be established to prioritize the hiring of graduates from the Semiconductor Meister High School according to each company's recruitment standards.
On the 15th of last month, the city also launched the 'Yongin Semiconductor Meister High School Designation Promotion Public-Private Council,' composed of 13 industry, government, and academic institutions, including the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, Yongin Education Support Office, Yongin City Council, Kangnam University, Kyung Hee University, Dankook University, Myongji University, Yongin Arts and Science University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Yongin Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Korea Semiconductor Display Technology Society, and Korea Semiconductor Industry Association.
Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin, said, "The city’s signing of business agreements with semiconductor-related companies and the establishment of a cooperative system involving industry, government, and academia will be a great driving force for the establishment and designation of the Yongin Semiconductor Meister High School. The establishment of a Semiconductor Meister High School teaching semiconductors and AI (artificial intelligence) is one of my pledges, and I am determined to make it happen."
Kim Sun-sik, Vice President of Samsung Electronics and Head of the DS Industry-Academic Cooperation Center, expressed gratitude, saying, "We appreciate Yongin Special City’s proactive efforts to nurture outstanding semiconductor talent. Samsung Electronics will also actively support the establishment of the Semiconductor Meister High School in Yongin, where our business sites are located, and the cultivation of excellent technical talent."
Kim Dong-seop, Head of External Cooperation at SK Hynix, emphasized, "Securing excellent talent is crucial enough to determine a company’s success or failure, so SK Hynix will actively support talent development through the establishment of the Yongin Semiconductor Meister High School."
The city is planning to establish the 'Yongin Semiconductor Meister High School' on a 21,000㎡ site at the Baekam High School sports ground in Baekam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, to cultivate semiconductor specialists. The new high school will operate a total of 12 classes with 192 students, including two departments: system control and semiconductor software, with 64 students per grade.
