Annual Gallery Guidebook Distribution 'Warning Notice'
Sign Request, No Mobile Phones or Cameras Allowed
The Masters is a dream stage. Only top-tier players can participate. It’s not just the players; amateur golfers also consider watching the Masters a ‘bucket list’ experience. The 87th Masters, opening on the 6th (local time) at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, USA, enforces strict gallery etiquette. This is to create an environment where players can perform at their best.

At the Masters, 40,000 ‘Patrons’ and 150,000 people during practice rounds gather, resulting in a crowd of up to 200,000 per day. It is important for the gallery to follow the rules. Since Robert Trent Jones (USA) announced spectator etiquette in 1949, a guidebook has been distributed to the gallery every year. The warning on the first page, “Patrons with poor manners will be immediately ejected,” is formidable.
Holding flags with players’ names, cheering slogans, or placards is all prohibited. Running while moving is absolutely forbidden. Applauding missed shots is also taboo. Entering inside the ropes is not allowed, and autograph requests cannot be made just anywhere. If you want an autograph, you must go near the clubhouse by Washington Road, close to the practice facilities. It is possible at the 9th hole of the ‘Par 3 Contest’ held the day before the opening. Electronic devices such as mobile phones and cameras are not allowed at all. This means no photography. Even metal detectors are used, making it impossible to hide them.
Spectator entry starts at 7 a.m. Considering the severe traffic congestion, it is best to avoid Washington Road if possible. Arrive at least 1 hour and 30 minutes early to secure souvenirs such as hats and badges at the pro shop. These sell out quickly. It is convenient to purchase food locally because prices at the golf course are unexpectedly reasonable. Augusta National Golf Club, which advocates ‘non-commercialism,’ also limits prices.
