'6 Years Ago Back Tumble, This Year Twist'... Hyundai Motor Jump Robot Evolves Fast

Won Jong-woo, CEO of Science and People, Interviewed by Kim Eo-jun
Robot Walks on Two Legs, Jumps, and Does a Back Tumble Like a Human

"The frontrunner is Boston Dynamics. This company was acquired by Hyundai Motor Company a few years ago, so it is now a Korean company."

Won Jong-woo, CEO of Science and People, said this during an interview on June 4th with Kim Eo-jun, the host of the YouTube show 'Kim Eo-jun's Humility is Hard News Factory.' This explanation came up while discussing the technological advancements of Boston Dynamics, the leader in developing bipedal robots that walk similarly to humans.

The reason bipedal robots are gaining attention among robots is that robots that move similarly to humans have a wider range of applications.

CEO Won explained, "The reason we make many bipedal robots that walk like humans is partly our dream, but actually because they can use the equipment and facilities designed for humans as they are."

In the broadcast, Boston Dynamics' bipedal robots from the 2017 version, 2021 version, and the latest version were showcased. The 2017 version became a hot topic for its human-like movements and even performing back tumbling. The 2021 version moved smoothly like a human and demonstrated walking on a sloped surface as well as turning curves.

CEO Won explained, "That path is very complex. It’s not operated by remote control; the robot was trained to navigate that path. So it goes on its own."

The 2023 version shows the robot holding objects in its hands and acting as an assistant at a construction site. It climbs stairs, even uses tools to build stairs, jumps, and performs sideways twist tumbling, showing further evolution.
