Jeonnam Province Strengthens Protection and Support for Stalking Victims

Emergency Housing and Rental Provision... Safety Equipment Installation and Police Cooperation Also Included

Jeonnam Province is strengthening protection and support for victims who find it difficult to live daily lives due to fear and anxiety caused by stalking by providing emergency housing and rental housing.

The emergency housing and rental housing support is a result of being selected for the pilot project for stalking victim support organized by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family in March.

A total of 228 million KRW, including 144 million KRW in national funds and 84 million KRW in local funds, is invested to operate the project through the Yeosu Women’s Shelter.

Emergency housing support provides six temporary accommodations in an individual residence format for victims who need urgent protection, ensuring the convenience of each resident. The stay period is within 7 days and can be extended up to a maximum of 30 days.

Rental housing support provides four rental houses where victims and their accompanying families can live and carry out daily activities such as commuting. Victims receive counseling, vocational training, employment support, and accompaniment services to ensure their safety. The stay period is within 3 months and can be extended up to an additional 3 months.

Additionally, safety equipment will be installed in the housing support facilities, and cooperation with the police will ensure the safe protection of victims residing in the facilities.

Yoo Mija, Jeonnam Province’s Director of Women and Family Policy, said, “We will provide thorough protection and support so that victims can overcome the aftereffects of stalking and maintain a safe daily life,” adding, “We will do our best for the mental and physical stability and recovery of victims.”

In the past three years, stalking victim reports in the Jeonnam area have rapidly increased, with 75 cases in 2020, 335 cases in 2021, and 785 cases in 2022, totaling 1,195 cases annually.
