Police Ban Former Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Executive Suspected of Bribery from Leaving the Country

The police have imposed a travel ban on a former executive of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) who is suspected of accepting bribes.

On the 1st, the Violent Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that it had imposed a travel ban on Kang, a former senior vice chairman of the FKTU, on the 6th of last month.

Kang is suspected of receiving several hundred million won from the National Construction Industry Labor Union, which was expelled from the FKTU last year, in exchange for facilitating re-entry into the FKTU, and of giving money to other executives as well.

In July of last year, the Construction Labor Union was expelled from the FKTU member unions due to the chairman’s embezzlement of union dues, complicity, and abnormal accounting practices. It is reported that the Construction Labor Union had hoped to return to the FKTU afterward.

The police had booked Kang on charges of embezzlement and attempted mediation of embezzlement on the 3rd of last month. On the 16th of last month, they also conducted a search and seizure at the FKTU office and Kang’s residence.
