"Blaming Economically Impoverished Father"... 40-Year-Old Sentenced to 18 Years for Parental Homicide

A man in his 40s was sentenced to prison for killing his father because he did not provide financial support.

The Criminal Division 12 of Daegu District Court (Presiding Judge Eo Jaewon) sentenced A (45), who was indicted for parricide, to 18 years in prison on the 31st.

A was prosecuted for stabbing his father B (75) multiple times with a weapon at a prefabricated building owned by B in Dong-gu, Daegu, at 2:18 p.m. on November 19 last year, causing B's death. A had previously borrowed money from B to start a business but quit and was unemployed when he requested financial help.

However, B refused and even nagged him, so A cut off contact with B in 2021. After a failed suicide attempt last year, A suddenly believed that his credit card debt of about 100 million won was due to B's irresponsibility and decided to kill his father.

A carried a weapon for three days and went to the crime scene to meet B. On the day of the crime, he waited for B in an open space near the prefabricated building and killed him.

Even though B, stabbed and collapsed, was gasping for breath, A left him unattended, removed the CCTV video storage device installed at the crime scene, and fled. He also disposed of his blood-stained clothes in several locations.

The court stated the reason for sentencing, saying, "Considering the circumstances before and after the crime, the tools used, the number and method of attacks, the nature of the crime is very bad, and the crime is very serious, so severe punishment is appropriate."
