Received emergency measures report after visiting Juam Control Dam... "We must ease residents' suffering"
President Yoon Suk-yeol personally inspected the drought situation in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions on the 31st and instructed, "Under no circumstances should water supply to local residents and industrial complexes be cut off."
On the same day, President Yoon visited the Juam Regulation Dam located in Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do, where he received a briefing on the current drought situation, outlook, and emergency measures from Minister of Environment Han Hwa-jin.
At the site, President Yoon told the Ministry of Environment and related agencies, "Connect the waterways of dams and rivers between regions to prioritize supply to urgent areas, and mobilize all available water resources such as groundwater." He added, "For island areas suffering from restricted water supply, emergency water supply measures such as operating seawater desalination ships should be expanded to alleviate residents' hardships."
President Yoon also instructed, "We must establish permanent climate crisis measures to protect the lives and safety of the people amid unprecedented extreme droughts and floods caused by the climate crisis." He further stated, "We should always keep in mind not only scientific analysis and forecasting but also rapid diagnosis and bold actions."
In addition, President Yoon said, "We must make the most of the four major river weirs that have been neglected so far and ensure thorough maintenance of aging pipelines," and emphasized, "We need to expand infrastructure such as dams dedicated to drinking water and flood control dams, and establish a science-based water management system."
