Former U.S. President Donald Trump has become the first current or former U.S. president to be criminally indicted, sparking a flood of satirical memes on social networking services (SNS).
On the 30th (local time), the British daily The Independent reported, "Former President Trump has become the first U.S. president to face criminal charges," adding, "As legal experts discussed what might happen to Trump, SNS users quickly began creating related memes."
According to the report, a Twitter user posted a photo that appears to show Trump yelling at a boy mowing the lawn at the White House. Along with the photo, the user wrote, "I need the Rita Hayworth poster!" The poster became famous as a tool used by the protagonist in the movie 'The Shawshank Redemption' to cover the hole he was digging in the prison wall to escape.
A photo parodying the Netflix drama Orange is the New Black is also spreading. In the image, former President Trump is wearing an orange outfit resembling a prison uniform. The background with measurement marks evokes a "mugshot" (a photo taken for criminal identification).
The movie site 'DiscussingFilm' posted a scene from the movie Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, saying, "Star Donald Trump has been criminally indicted." In the scene, Trump is shown giving directions to the protagonist Kevin (Macaulay Culkin). Trump made a brief cameo appearance in this film.
Meanwhile, a grand jury in Manhattan, New York, decided to indict former President Trump over allegations that he paid hush money to a porn actress to cover up a sexual scandal during the 2016 presidential election.
He is accused of paying $130,000 (about 160 million won) from the family business, the Trump Organization, and falsifying corporate documents by recording the payment as "legal consulting fees."
Immediately after the indictment, former President Trump issued a statement, calling it "political persecution and the highest level of election interference in history." He added, "The Democrats have committed an unimaginable act of indicting a completely innocent person for blatant election interference," and said, "This witch hunt will be a huge backlash against President Joe Biden."
