On January 1st, the first day of the new year and a holiday, he stayed at a vacation home with his family in Reno, Nevada. At that time, 6 to 12 inches (about 15 to 30 cm) of snow fell around Reno, and in higher altitude areas, up to 18 inches (about 45 cm) of heavy snow was reported.
Renner used his snowplow to help drivers trapped inside their cars on the road. After towing the vehicles, he got out in his yard, but then the snowplow slipped and started moving toward his nephew. Trying to stop it, he got back into the driver's seat but was crushed by the 6.5-ton snowplow.
He suffered severe chest injuries from the accident and was airlifted to a hospital where he underwent two surgeries. More than 30 bones were broken, and his lungs were damaged, among other serious injuries. He was once in critical condition but later improved and regained consciousness. Although he is still using a wheelchair, he has been receiving consistent physical therapy since being discharged.
After the accident, Hillary Schieve, the mayor of Reno, said, "Renner always helps others," highlighting his efforts for the local community over the years. She added, "Renner always called to ask what help was needed," and "Although Renner sometimes reveals his good deeds like donations, most people probably don’t know what he has done."
Netizens who heard the news responded with comments such as "A true superhero," "What a great uncle," and "From keeping a snowplow at home, it seems he always wanted to help others."
