On the 29th, Pohang City held the appointment ceremony and regular meeting of the Pohang City MICE Industry Support Committee in the city hall's medium conference room.
In preparation for the construction of the Pohang International Exhibition & Convention Center (hereinafter referred to as the Convention Center), scheduled for completion in 2026, and the promotion of the MICE industry, the city enacted the "Ordinance on the Promotion of Pohang City MICE Industry" (effective July 6, 2022). Based on this, the Committee was established to strengthen the competitiveness of the local MICE industry.
The Committee is composed of a total of 15 members, including Chairperson Yoon Eun-ju, President of the Korea Convention & Exhibition Industry Institute, 14 appointed experts in the MICE field such as Shin Hyun-dae, CEO of Expo Forum, and one ex officio member.
They are expected to play a pivotal role in deriving successful strategic plans for the Convention Center, advising on measures to revitalize Pohang’s MICE industry, and advancing the city as a global MICE hub.
At this Committee meeting, Lee Soo-heon, principal architect of ING Architects, who is in charge of the Convention Center design project, explained the direction and plans related to the construction of the Convention Center. During the subsequent open discussion, Committee members presented their opinions on efficient spatial composition strategies for the Convention Center from their respective fields.
The attending members offered a wide range of expert opinions to ensure the successful construction of the Convention Center, including “eco-friendly Convention Center architecture,” “citizen-friendly Convention Center development,” and “digital MICE space configuration.”
Deputy Mayor Kim Nam-il stated, “The MICE industry, which drives regional industrial growth and revitalizes the local economy, is expected to significantly contribute to strengthening Pohang’s urban competitiveness in the future. We anticipate that the Committee will serve as a vital resource in establishing Pohang as a leading MICE city.”
Going forward, Pohang City plans to develop exhibitions linked to future new growth industries such as secondary batteries, bio, and hydrogen, and will continuously promote the attraction of international events in cooperation with excellent research institutions like POSTECH and Handong Global University.
In connection with the construction of the Convention Center, the city also aims to strengthen its competitiveness as a marine tourism city by establishing a regional MICE industry foundation through initiatives such as attracting a luxury hotel to Hwanho Park and building marine tourism infrastructure.
