Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, released 90,000 juvenile abalones over two days on the 29th and 30th in three local village fishing grounds: Bugyeong-ri, Daebu-ri, and Daejin-ri, to create abundant marine resources and promote income increase for fishermen.

Yeongdeok and Pohang Jointly Release 90,000 Juvenile Abalones in Border Area Fishermen from Bugyeong-ri in Yeongdeok-gun and Jigyeong-ri in Pohang City jointly released juvenile abalone.

The juvenile abalones released this time are healthy, high-quality seeds measuring 3.5 cm each, produced by the Gyeongbuk Fisheries Resources Research Institute with secured genetic diversity. Fishermen divers from the fishing cooperatives directly placed them safely in areas rich in reefs and seaweed, where they will grow into healthy adults up to 9 cm in size.

In particular, this release was jointly conducted by Yeongdeok-gun and Pohang City at the boundary points of Bugyeong-ri in Yeongdeok-gun and Jigyeong-ri in Pohang City, maximizing its effectiveness. The two local governments have agreed to maintain a close cooperative relationship to restore the marine ecosystem and increase fishery resources in the future.

Jung Sang-ho, Director of the Marine Fisheries Division, said, “We hope the released juvenile abalones grow robustly to help increase fishermen’s income and secure food for the public.” He added, “We will do our utmost to create and maintain a healthy and abundant marine ecosystem, valuing the clean and pristine sea and the high-quality marine products from our county as the greatest future assets.”

Yeongdeok-gun is efficiently protecting and managing marine resources in village fishing grounds by promoting a village fishing ground guardian project to eradicate invasive species threatening the marine environment and monitor illegal shellfish gathering.
