Daejeon City is collaborating with the five districts within its jurisdiction to crack down on illegal parking of Personal Mobility (PM) devices.
This initiative aims to enhance safety management in response to the increasing number of PM users and the corresponding rise in accidents.
On the 30th, Lee Taek-gu, the Deputy Mayor, met with the heads of the five district offices for the "4th City-District Policy Coordination Meeting," the city announced.
At this meeting, eight cooperation tasks between the city and districts, including "PM towing cooperation measures," were discussed. In particular, the city requested the five districts to participate in measures to eradicate unauthorized PM abandonment.
Given the nationwide increase in PM users and the sharp rise in safety accidents from 117 cases in 2017 to 1,735 cases in 2021, the background is that the city and the five autonomous districts must collaborate on PM safety management.
Currently, seven companies operate 10,280 PM devices in Daejeon.
First, the city ordered each district to prepare in advance in line with the proposed revision of the "Daejeon PM Safety and Convenience Promotion Ordinance." The revision will designate no-parking zones for PMs and establish grounds for towing and fee collection.
Especially to ensure the effectiveness of related measures, the city urged the districts to secure towing companies, expand sidewalk patrol officers, and build an organic cooperation system with PM companies.
District officials attending the meeting agreed on the necessity of the city's measures and expressed their intention to set detailed action plans through future practical discussions.
Additionally, attendees discussed ▲ budget support for the Bomun 1 District Residential Environment Improvement Project ▲ support for the construction of the Gajang-dong Complex Community Center ▲ permission for privately commissioned libraries to use the city’s integrated book management system ▲ and remodeling cost support for the Daedeok District Family Center.
Deputy Mayor Lee Taek-gu said, “Whenever new infrastructure, facilities, or means are introduced, it is essential to prioritize citizen safety by preparing safety measures. In particular, illegal parking of PMs has recently emerged as a social issue, and I ask for the active cooperation of the districts to resolve this problem.”
