Daegu Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market to Relocate to Dapyeong-ri, Habin-myeon, Dalseong-gun by 2031

Designation of Ijeonji Land Permit Zone

4 Billion Won Invested in Advanced Facilities

Daegu City announced on the 30th that it will relocate the agricultural and marine products wholesale market to Daepyeong-ri, Habin-myeon, Dalseong-gun.

By 2031, the city plans to invest over 400 billion KRW to build a wholesale market with advanced wholesale distribution facilities such as auctions, processing, and sorting on a 278,000㎡ site. Plans will also be made for the redevelopment of the current Maechon-dong wholesale market site.

The Daegu Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market, located in Maechon-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu, is the largest public wholesale market south of the Han River with an annual transaction volume of 1.1 trillion KRW. Since its opening in 1988, it has played a pivotal role in the distribution of local agricultural and marine products for 35 years.

However, due to aging facilities causing fires, limited site area, and insufficient logistics and parking space, distribution workers have continuously requested relocation. Nearby residents have also urgently requested the move due to traffic congestion and odor problems, making the relocation of the wholesale market a long-standing regional wish.

In 2018, the city decided to expand and rebuild the current site by adding distribution facilities as an alternative to relocation and began the project. However, there were many criticisms that the lack of scalability to respond to the rapidly changing distribution environment limited the fundamental resolution of the current wholesale market’s problems.

In October of last year, a fire destroyed 68 stores in the agricultural and marine products wholesale market.

To select the relocation site, Daegu City designated two candidate sites in January: the Paldal district in Buk-gu and the Daepyeong district in Habin-myeon, Dalseong-gun.

Based on 20 evaluation criteria including future scalability, mid- to long-term potential conditions, economic conditions such as relocation project costs, and transportation and development conditions, a thorough field survey, analysis, and expert panel verification were conducted. Daepyeong district in Dalseong-gun was selected as the final relocation site due to its high future expansion potential, advantageous facility layout, free land provision by Dalseong-gun, and expanded authority to lift development restrictions, resulting in high evaluations for project feasibility and economic efficiency.

The final selected Daepyeong-ri relocation site will be built as a 21st-century advanced wholesale market by introducing the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs’ advanced agricultural product distribution system.

Smart logistics facilities such as an online exchange, electronic delivery notes, and big data distribution information systems will be established, and advanced facilities such as collection and delivery centers and preprocessing facilities (washing, sorting, processing, subdividing, repackaging, etc.) will be operated. A logistics integrated management system will be set up for scheduling shipment items and controlling inbound and delivery vehicles, and training for online specialized distributors will also be promoted.

Additionally, an eco-friendly agricultural product supply center and a livestock product distribution center will be installed to expand and convert the wholesale market into a comprehensive agricultural, marine, and livestock products wholesale market. Strengthening wholesale functions and discovering large demand sources such as large marts, food material distributors, and processing companies will be prioritized to revitalize the wholesale market commercial district.

To prevent speculation related to the selection of the new agricultural and marine products market site, Daegu City designated and announced the relocation site and surrounding areas as a ‘Land Transaction Permission Zone’ as of the 30th. Continuous monitoring of the area will be conducted, and if rapid land price increases or speculative movements are detected, plans to expand the land transaction permission zone will be pursued.

Mayor Hong Jun-pyo stated, “We plan to promote the relocation of the wholesale market as a growth engine for Daegu’s distribution industry for the next 50 years,” adding, “By introducing an advanced distribution system including digital transformation of agricultural, marine, and livestock product transactions, we will modernize the distribution structure to create a Daegu Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market that satisfies both producers and consumers.”
