Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province will support adoption fees of up to 150,000 KRW per pet for citizens who adopt companion animals from the city’s Animal Protection Center.
The adoption fees can be used for the pet’s health care, including health checkups, hospital treatments, vaccinations, and grooming. Reimbursement is made by submitting payment receipts, which are then refunded via bank transfer.
Applicants wishing to apply must visit or send mail to the city’s Animal Protection Center within six months after adoption. However, they must complete the pre-adoption education course before applying.
Last year, Yongin City supported adoption fees totaling 28.39 million KRW for 184 households that adopted companion animals. This year, the city plans to support up to 37.5 million KRW for 250 households.
To adopt a companion animal from the city, first check the animals under protection through the Animal Protection Management System or the application 'Paw in Hand' (Poinhaendeu), then make a consultation appointment with the city’s Animal Protection Center (031-324-3463).
During the consultation, careful consideration is given to whether the adopter can responsibly care for the animal, and same-day adoptions are not conducted to allow sufficient time for decision-making.
The city thoroughly manages vaccinations, neutering surgeries, and animal registration to increase the adoption possibilities of protected abandoned animals. Additionally, adoption shelters for abandoned animals are operated at five dog cafes within the city to help citizens comfortably interact with animals and break prejudices against adoption.
Over the past year, the city rescued 828 dogs and cats, of which 323 were adopted by new owners. Another 173 animals were returned to their original owners.
A city official stated, "We ask citizens to take a keen interest in adopting abandoned animals to establish a proper companion animal culture," and added, "The city will continue to provide various forms of support."
