Expecting Added Value from Concentration of Used Battery Recycling Technology
Seo Dong-yong, a member of the National Assembly (Suncheon·Gwangyang·Gokseong·Gurye-eul) who was appointed as a member of the National Assembly's Special Committee on Advanced Strategic Industries, announced that he will play a bridgehead role in establishing a secondary battery specialized complex in Gwangyang.
On the 27th, in an interview with a local broadcasting station, Assemblyman Seo stated, “I plan to carefully examine the secondary battery industry, which is emerging as a new future growth engine in the Gwangyang area,” expressing this position.
The National Assembly's Special Committee on Advanced Industries is a special committee formed by bipartisan agreement to review the government's advanced strategic industry policies and discuss measures to foster and protect advanced strategic industries, including investment promotion, workforce development, regulatory reform, and financial support at the National Assembly level.
Earlier, in November last year, the government held the 'National Advanced Strategic Industry Committee' and announced plans to select 15 national advanced strategic technology fields in three major industries: semiconductors, secondary batteries, and displays, and to discover and establish various support policies.
In the interview, Assemblyman Seo said, “I believe Gwangyang City has the optimal conditions to form an industrial ecosystem for secondary batteries,” and expressed his determination, saying, “I will do my best to enable the designation of Gwangyang as an advanced secondary battery industrial special zone.”
He continued, “Posco Chemical, which can develop the nation's best secondary battery cathode materials, is located in Gwangyang City,” and emphasized the potential by stating, “In 2020, we secured national budget at the National Assembly to promote the ‘Eco-friendly Lithium Secondary Battery Recycling Test Bed Construction Project.’”
In particular, he predicted, “From 2025, a large amount of used batteries is expected to be discarded, and if we can develop technology to recycle them and cluster related industries in Gwangyang, it will generate significant added value.”
Therefore, he emphasized, “As a member of the Advanced Special Committee, I will fulfill my role to ensure that the national advanced strategic industry innovation ecosystem is established not with concentration in the metropolitan area but from the perspective of balanced national development.”
Meanwhile, the National Assembly's Special Committee on Advanced Strategic Industries will begin full-scale activities starting next month.
