The 2nd Pohang Janggi Exile Culture Festival will be held on April 1 and 2 in the Janggi-myeon area, where exile culture developed centered around Uam and Dasan.
According to Pohang City, this year’s Pohang Janggi Exile Culture Festival will be held under the theme “Uam and Dasan, Opening a New Path,” featuring various academic, literary, and performance programs related to them.
On April 1 at 11 a.m., an academic forum titled “Dasan Jeong Yak-yong and Exile Culture Forum” will be held on the 3rd floor of the Janggi-myeon Multipurpose Welfare Center, where experts from the Pohang area and Gangjin will discuss exile culture and Jeong Yak-yong.
Following this, at Janggi Elementary School, a “220-Character Short Writing Contest” will be held for local elementary students, with awards and prizes given to a total of 19 winners: 1 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze, and 10 honorable mentions.
Additionally, as a pre-ceremony event, a procession reenacting the exile journey of Dasan and Uam will proceed from the Janggi-myeon Administrative Welfare Center to Janggi Elementary School, followed by a business agreement between the Pohang Cultural Foundation and the Gangjin County Cultural Tourism Foundation. After the ceremony, a musical gala show titled “Jeong Yak-yong on the Edge” themed on Dasan Jeong Yak-yong will be performed.
After the opening ceremony, a talk concert titled “Dasan, Communicating with Janggi” will be held at Janggi Elementary School, integrating literature and art based on the inscriptions and writings Dasan left in Janggi. At the Janggi Exile Culture Experience Village, a “Romantic Concert” featuring jazz, acoustic music, and pop soprano will offer visitors a romantic night in Janggi.
Alongside this, traditional play experiences with actors dressed as Joseon Dynasty figures will be held over the two days at the Janggi Exile Culture Experience Village, and photo zones with traditional costumes will be set up throughout the exile culture village.
Moreover, the first 300 visitors to the Janggi Elementary School event venue will receive an outdoor escape room kit to enjoy using their smartphones.
At Janggi Eupseong, a “Path of Contemplation Walk” will take place, where cultural tourism guides will lead visitors through major historical sites in Janggi-myeon, sharing stories embedded in the area.
On the 2nd, starting from Janggi Elementary School, an eco-friendly plogging campaign linked with local organizations will be conducted to practice ESG for a sustainable cultural festival.
During the event period, various experience programs will be held at Janggi Elementary School, including food tasting, local agricultural and marine product sales, tea ceremony experience, sharing of refreshments, Pohang craft beer tasting, weaving experience, dancheong (traditional decorative coloring) experience, hanbok experience, and old book making.
A representative of the Pohang Cultural Foundation stated, “Through the Pohang Janggi Exile Culture Festival, we plan to raise awareness of Janggi-myeon and develop it into a leading domestic brand region for exile culture.”
