Ulsan Breaks Ground on First Industrial Accident Hospital... 11th Specialized Public Hospital Nationwide

300 Beds, 18 Medical Departments, Opening in Early 2026

Treatment and Rehabilitation for Industrial Accident Patients, Providing Essential Medical Services to Residents

A specialized public hospital for industrial accident patients will finally be established in Ulsan. It is scheduled to open in 2026.

On the 29th at 2:30 PM, Ulsan City announced that it will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the 'Industrial Accident Specialized Public Hospital' in the Gulhwa-ri area of Beomseo-eup, Ulju-gun.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be attended by about 100 people, including Kim Doo-gyeom, Mayor of Ulsan, Lee Jeong-sik, Minister of Employment and Labor, Kang Soon-hee, President of the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service, and local residents.

The industrial accident specialized public hospital, the 11th of its kind nationwide, will be built in the Taehwagang Riverside Public Housing District in Gulhwa-ri, Beomseo-eup, Ulju-gun, with a total construction cost of 227.7 billion KRW. The hospital will have a site area of 33,000㎡, a total floor area of 47,962㎡, two basement floors, eight above-ground floors, and a capacity of 300 beds.

It will operate as a general hospital with 18 medical departments, equipped with a rehabilitation specialized center, a regional emergency medical institution, a health screening center, and two research institutes (Occupational Disease Research Institute and Rehabilitation Assistive Device Research Institute). It is expected to open in the first half of 2026.

Additionally, to support the early return to the workplace through systematic and specialized treatment and rehabilitation of industrial accident patients, a Work and Family Adaptation Training Center will be operated. The hospital will also provide general medical care, emergency medical services, and essential healthcare services to local residents.

In particular, during public health crises such as COVID-19, the hospital will convert beds into infection-dedicated wards to operate as emergency treatment beds for critically ill patients.

Ulsan City hopes to create a new bio-medical industry by conducting joint research in the field of industrial accident medicine and training specialized personnel together with UNIST, aiming for high value-added industrial accident medical technology commercialization.

Kim Doo-gyeom, Mayor of Ulsan, said, “We will do our best to provide administrative support so that the construction of the industrial accident specialized public hospital can proceed swiftly to expand Ulsan’s insufficient public medical infrastructure.”
