LG Innotek Develops 5G Communication Module Connecting Vehicles and Objects... Accelerating Autonomous Driving Strategy

LG Innotek announced on the 29th that it has successfully developed the 2nd generation Qualcomm chip-based ‘5G-V2X communication module’ that significantly improves long-distance data transmission speed between vehicles and objects (V2X·Vehicle to Everything). With this product development, LG Innotek can accelerate its entry into the autonomous vehicle parts market.

LG Innotek Develops 5G Communication Module Connecting Vehicles and Objects... Accelerating Autonomous Driving Strategy

The ‘5G-V2X communication module’ is a component that supports data transmission and reception between vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P), and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) using 5G mobile communication technology. It is a module combining communication chips, memory, RF (radio frequency) circuits, and is mainly installed inside the vehicle or on vehicle communication devices on the roof. It receives numerous data necessary for driving from nearby base stations. It is an essential element for safe autonomous driving.

The newly developed 2nd generation module has increased data download speed from 35Mbps to 150Mbps, more than four times faster than the previous product. To minimize high-frequency 5G signal loss caused by direct sunlight and heat, the temperature control algorithm has also been advanced. As a result, it provides 5G vehicle communication that maintains intact quality even at high temperatures of 90℃.

Moreover, it was developed in a size of 46mm x 50mm, up to 20% smaller than the existing released products. It is half the size of a standard credit card, making it easy to install anywhere inside or outside the vehicle. Since it applies the latest 5G standards from the global mobile communication standardization cooperation organization, it can be used regardless of country, terrain, or vehicle type.

LG Innotek is actively promoting the commercialization of the 2nd generation ‘5G-V2X communication module’ by 2025, targeting not only domestic but also global automakers and vehicle electronic parts companies in Europe, the United States, and Japan. Yoo Byung-guk, head of the electronic parts division, said, “The 2nd generation ‘5G-V2X communication module’ will become a core component that opens the era of fully autonomous driving.”
