Deceiving with Domestic Origin of Kimchi in Kimchi Jjigae
The owner of a restaurant who sold kimchi stew made with Chinese kimchi while falsely claiming to use mostly domestic kimchi was sentenced to prison.
The Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 5 (Judge Kim Jeongheon) announced on the 28th that A (56), who was indicted for violating the Agricultural and Fishery Products Origin Labeling Act, was sentenced to 8 months in prison with a 2-year probation and fined 3 million won.
A, who runs a restaurant in Seo-gu, Daejeon, sold 309 million won worth of kimchi stew from late October 2019 to late February last year. During this period, A was prosecuted on charges of falsely claiming to have used a mix of 70% domestic and 30% Chinese napa cabbage kimchi, while all 8,800 kg of the napa cabbage kimchi used were actually Chinese.
He was also charged with falsely labeling the origin of the chili powder used in making the side dish of fresh kimchi, which was actually a mix of Chinese and Vietnamese chili powder, as domestic chili powder.
A’s restaurant was known for its popularity by selling kimchi stew about 1,000 won cheaper than other nearby restaurants.
The court explained the sentencing by stating, "Although the crime was committed over a long period and the sales volume was considerable, the defendant showed remorse and has no prior record of similar offenses."
